October 6th 2010

I have nearly finished my open evening road show and will have visited year 6 pupils in all 10 primary schools by the end of tomorrow! I have been hugely impressed by all the pupils and look forward to seeing them and their parents/guardians on the 21st October at 4.30.It’s been great meeting everybody and am thankful to all the schools for the very warm welcome I have received.

I would hope that everybody chooses to come to Mountain Ash as school results tell us that we are one of the best schools in Wales with over 70% of pupils gaining 5 A*-C in year 11 and over 95% passing at A level and going off to university.

However If you are thinking about moving on to other schools I would still urge you all to come to our school as there’s nothing like first hand information in order to make up your mind.

We have a great evening organised for you and every department will be represented, from Science to PE the evening is designed to show you what a great education Mountain Ash can offer whatever your ability.

It was great to get the school up and running today. I would like to warmly welcome all of our new year 7. This is the beginning of my first full year at Mountain Ash and I guess  I’ll embark on my journey as headteacher  alongside year 7.

I must thank our caretaking team for the huge amount of work undertaken over the summer. In particular we have redesigned our canteen and rebranded it as Caffi Macs. The menu is available for all to see on our website. I hope that as many pupils as possible take the opportunity to choose their healthy meals the night before. The menu is fortnightly, and contains healthy options which are cheaper than the local shops.

It is also great to see so many back in form six on the back of a bumber set of GCSE results.

I’m really looking forward to a great term, and to see the hard work put in over the summer months paying dividends in the shape of a better school for our students.

Mr H Lloyd – Headteacher/Prifathro

I’d like to thank everybody for the very warm welcome I’ve received in Mountain Ash. It’s a super school with great children and an outstanding staff. I have already observed all members of staff teach and I can say with some justification that the staff are up there with the best in Wales. We have exciting plans in place to develop the school over the summer.

  • We will be spending over 100k to develop our ICT facilities, and will be adding state of the art equipment to the present system. I will shortly be visiting a world renowned educational research centre in order to plan for new developments over the coming year.
  • A large 50 inch flat screen television will be placed in the foyer in order to celebrate the work of our children through picture, and sound.
  • Our canteen will be refurbished and re-launched as Caffi Macs . The eating environment will be enhanced with new furniture and screens on walls so that the atmosphere becomes more akin to a Caffi. The pupils are presently involved in a competition run to find a logo to accompany the new name.
  • The new Caffi Macs will sell a wide variety of carefully selected nutritious meals as part of our drive to im-prove the health and wellbeing of our children.
  • Large parts of the school will be repainted and work from our superb art department will be located around the school. We feel that the learning environment is important and will add to the vibrancy of the school.
  • We are very keen to develop the school as a community facility. The University of Glamorgan will begin to use Mountain Ash as a base for their Welsh for adult’s courses from September, and The Cardiff City soccer foundation will use our fantastic location to run their successful holiday soccer schools.

I hope these developments give you a flavour of things to come. Education is changing in the Cynon Valley and I’ll make sure that Mountain Ash is at the forefront of those changes. I would also like to thank year 11, 12 and 13 for their superb behaviour and commitment during the examination season, and look forward to a bumper set of results in August.
