Newspaper and television headlines offer continual reminders of how relevant and of how much interest the business world is to us all. The Credit Crunch, growing concerns for  the economy, supermarket dominance of the grocery market, the environment, the impact of new technologies on business and working lives. All these issues  are studied within the business studies curriculum.

Business Studies is therefore one of the more varied and diverse subjects available. Business Studies complements all other subject combinations.

How Parents can help

The department considers parents as a valuable resource to the school, and the closer the link between the department and parents, the greater the impact the department can have on pupils. The department encourages open communication with parents especially with regard to seeking parental support in dealing with concerns such as their child failing to produce work.  Parents can also help by checking that homework is recorded in their child’s planner and completed on time to the best of their child’s ability. Parents can also help by ensuring that their child has the required equipment for lessons.

Parents can make valuable contributions to their child’s education by discussing their experiences at work or of managing the household budget. We would encourage all students to read a good newspaper and watch the news daily and discuss the social, political and economic issues raised at home and at school.

Key Stage 4

The department teaches the Edexcel BTEC Business course

Key Stage 5

The department teaches the WJEC ‘A’ level course and the BTEC Workskills course.

Business Studies offers pupils a new challenge and an opportunity to learn a new subject. Why study Business? Every time you buy a bar of chocolate, take a bus ride home or do your paper round, you are playing an important part in the workings of the business world. Studying Business Studies will give you an appreciation and understanding of the business world and will help you get the most out of your roles of customer, employee and maybe later on, employer.
