Why Drama?

Why exactly should Drama be included in the whole school curriculum and what contribution can it make that other subjects can’t?

Answer

Drama should be included in the school curriculum because it encourages the pupil to understand himself / herself and the world in which they live. This element of Drama supports the pastoral / citizenship programme within the school very well.

However, Drama is also a subject in its own right. Therefore, alongside the exploration of PSE issues and themes, Drama is taught directly in terms of plays, playwrights, theorists, dramatists, theatrical techniques and performance skills.

Overall, Drama is concerned with the personal, social and aesthetic education of the pupil as well as developing subject specific knowledge.

The aims of the Drama Department are to encourage and develop:-

An understanding of self discipline in performance

     Creativity

     Sensitivity

     Confidence

     Communication

Knowledge and understanding of Drama techniques and forms

     Self and peer evaluation

Extra-Curricular Activities

The department is heavily involved in putting on an annual school production that is open for all pupils to participate in.

As of September 2010, there will be a weekly rehearsal for the Glee Club where you can practise your singing and dancing skills in preparation for regular public performances.
