Drama KS5

 

Students at KS5 study BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts. Mountain Ash Comprehensive School is the leader school in delivering this course within the Consortium and therefore the course is also available to students from Aberdare High, Aberdare Girls School, Blaengwawr Comprehensive and St Johns Comprehensive School.

This course aims to “provide a broad educational base for further training, further education and employment within the performing arts sector. The qualifications will develop learners’ abilities through the knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme”. The course specification can be found on the following link.

Throughout the course students will complete 6 Units – 2 core Units and 4 optional Units.

Assessment

Throughout each unit there will be approximately four / five areas of assessment. The assessment tasks will take different forms ranging from presentations, working diaries to final practical performances.  The grading system in BTEC is rather different to GCSE and AS / A2 levels as there are three degrees of passing an assessment – pass, merit and distinction. ALL assignments will be tutor assessed and internally verified as means of moderation. 

Parental Support

  • Ensure that their child regularly attends school in order to progress throughout the course
  • Notify the school if their child will be absent from a lesson
  • Offer support with line learning at home in preparation for various practical examinations
  • Allow their child quiet time at home in order to complete written assignments
  • Urge their child to see as much theatre / drama in their spare time – professional and amateur and to attend school theatre trips
