AS/A2 English
The Department offers English Literature at AS & A Level in Years 12 & 13. We follow the WJEC exam board specification. The minimum entry requirement is a grade C at GCSE in English Language and/or Literature. A Level is taught by two members of the department: Mrs Winters and Miss Hacker.
The AS specification has been designed to serve both as the first half of a full A level course and also as a discrete course for those wishing to follow just one year of study.
The A level specification extends these studies in breadth and depth, developing and enhancing students’ techniques of analysis, evaluation and comparison of literary texts in the context of a wider range of texts of cultural and literary significance.
The AS course is made up of two units entitled LT1 and LT2.
LT1: pupils must study a poetry post-1990 core text and a partner text as well as studying a drama post-1990 text. At the end of the year, pupils sit a 2 ½ hour external exam where clean copies of the texts may be used.
LT2: pupils will complete a coursework folder. Two assignments are set on Prose Study & Creative Reading and Prose Study.
The A2 course is made up of a further two units entitled LT3 and LT4.
LT3: pupils produce a 3000 word coursework essay on three texts from different periods and genres.
LT4: pupils study poetry and drama in this unit which is assessed at the end of the year in a 2 ½ hour external examination.
AS contributes 50% of the total A Level marks and grades are awarded on an A* – E basis.
Opportunities are also provided for candidates to develop key skills, especially those in Communication.
