Pupils follow WJEC English Language and Literature in Year 10 & 11.  The scheme of work aims to develop pupils’ skills in Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing and build on the work they did at Key Stage 3.  Pupils are entered for either the Higher Tier (Grades A*-D) or the Foundation Tier (Grades C-G).  Traditionally, coursework has played an important part in the assessment process with pupils having to complete six pieces across their Language and Literature Folders over two years.  In Language, pupils are also internally assessed in Speaking & Listening and sit two external exams at the end of Year 11.  In Literature, pupils sit one external exam which tests their knowledge of two set texts and unseen poetry analysis.

One of the biggest changes will be the move away from coursework to a system of Controlled Assessment.  Pupils will no longer be expected to take work home to complete and work set will be completed in school under teacher supervision. Macbeth Workshop          Monday 7th November 2011

On Monday 7th November 2011 all of our year 10 pupils were lucky enough to experience a two hour Macbeth workshop run by professional actors Jules Hobbs and Richard Curnow.  The company ‘Finding the Will’ which is run by Jules and Richard offers specialised workshops to help students to understand the Shakespeare they are studying.

During the workshop pupils got to look into and understand more about:

  • Plot
  • Key Scenes
  • Staging/Directing
  • Language Analysis
  • Characterisation
  • Pupils also got to act and direct scenes.

This was an extremely useful tool in preparing year 10 for their GCSE controlled assessment.
