Child

GCSE Home Economics Child Development

This GCSE course looks at the development of children up to the age of five years.  Students will be encouraged to recognise the importance of a stimulating and caring environment for young children and appreciate their needs within the family and community.

Students who study this course will develop skills in independent thinking, working with others and various ICT skills whilst applying knowledge and understanding in the following topics -

  • Parenthood
  • Pregnancy
  • Diet, health and care of the child
  • Support for families

Assessment

Assessment takes the form of written and practical tasks throughout the course. It comprises two externally-set tasks –

  • Research task completed in Year 10 (20%)
  • Child Study completed in year 11(40%) – Students must have access to a child under the age of 5 for this part of the course and be able to visit once a month for 4 consecutive months.
  • A written exam (40% )

Students have the opportunity to sit this exam at the end of Year 10 which, if they are successful with this, will allow them to focus on the Child Study in Year 11.

How parents can best support their children

  1. Ensure that students are prepared for lessons
  2. Encourage students to work on coursework tasks at home and talk about this work
  3. Support students when working on child study by giving them opportunities to visit the child they are studying

Homework Policy

Students are expected to work more independently with regard to homework. They need to ensure all class work is finished, complete research and planning for coursework at home and prepare for tests and examinations.
