GCSE in Food and Nutrition (WJEC) 

This is a practical subject which has successfully been taught at MACS for over 18 years and has excellent examination results. Students develop and demonstrate food preparation and handling skills through practical activities, whilst applying knowledge and understanding in the following topics –

  • Nutrition, diet and health throughout life
  • Factors affecting consumer choice
  • Nutritional, physical, chemical and sensory properties of foods
  • Food hygiene and safety 

The specification is designed to give students an opportunity to extend and apply culinary skills developed in Key Stage 3 and gain further knowledge and understanding of food and nutrition. 

The specification provides students with the opportunities to develop critical thinking and to manage a range of resources to develop food items which are suited to the needs of individuals or families, and to recognise the influence of current trends, market economy and technological change.

 Assessment

Assessment takes the form of written and practical tasks throughout the course.

Students will take a written paper at the end of Year 11. 

Unit 1: Principles of Food & Nutrition Written Paper (40% of the total mark)

            Coursework element accounts for (60% of the total mark)

Unit 2: Food & Nutrition practical tasks Controlled assessment (60%)

  • Task 1 -20% completed in Year 10
  • Task 2- 40% completed in Year 11 

This coursework consists of a task which includes both written and practical elements. 

How parents can best support their children

  1. Ensure that students are prepared for practical lessons which will usually take place every fortnight, sometimes weekly depending on topics.
  2. Discuss what they are doing in the subject and encourage them to practice cookery skills at home, and to watch programmes relevant to cookery and nutrition. 

Homework Policy

Students are expected to work more independently with regard to homework.  They need to ensure all class work is finished, complete research and planning for coursework at home and prepare for tests and examinations.
