Britain’s closer links with Europe provide compelling practical reasons for equipping our young people with the ability to communicate in other languages. Knowledge of other languages and cultures also helps to overcome attitudes of intolerance and insularity. Pupils may also develop a greater appreciation of their own culture and the Welsh language. As a department, we aim to promote:
- enjoyment and confidence in the use of language
- development of communication skills
- competence across the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing and in the combined use of these skills
- progression from familiar to less predictable language situations
- the ability to work together and independently
- experience of authentic materials and situations including, where possible, trips abroad, use of television programmes and time with the Foreign Language Assistant
- cultural enrichment and a widening of horizons
- a positive attitude towards languages, those who speak other languages, and an understanding of the multicultural nature of modern society.
We are also joined each year by a French university student as our Language Assistant.
