 Homework

The Department believes that the regular setting of homework assists in the furthering of the partnership between school and home. It encourages the consolidation of work undertaken in the classroom and the pupils to promote self discipline and develop good habits and skills.

In History, pupils are set homework once a fortnight and staff endeavour to set a wide range of meaningful tasks. These could include:-

  • written exercises to show understanding of concepts
  • copying a map/diagram
  • finding out the meaning of words/phrases
  • completion of exercises begun in class
  • researching a topic in advance of a lesson using dept. library, school library or public library or ICT
  • examination of primary/secondary sources
  • a piece of reading
  • part of an extended project/report
  • preparing for an assessment

Such exercises should take about 20/25 minutes to complete in Years 7 & 8 rising to 35/40 minutes in Year 9.

Support for your children

You can best support your child by ensuring that attendance is good. Keep a check on exercise books as comments from staff will indicate areas worthy of praise and will highlight any issues or areas of concern. Check homework has been done and encourage revision for assessments when given.
