 Year 9

We will be introducing a modular GCSE course from September 2010.  The examination board we use is Edexcel.  (www.edexcel.org.uk)

The core text book we will be using is Edexcel’s own text published by Pearson.  As this is a modular course, high attendance is of paramount importance to ensure the progression of all pupils as accreditation is gained throughout.

Assessment Schedule

Assessment Date Type of Assessment
October Written Paper (%)
December Investigation  (Level)
March Written Paper (%)
May Summer Exam (%)

 Homework Policy

The aim of the homework policy is to promote learning at home as an essential part of good education. Homework not only reinforces classroom learning, it also helps children and young people to develop skills and attitudes they need for successful lifelong learning. It supports the development of independent learning skills, including the habits of enquiry and investigation.

When students are given homework, they should expect to have it returned marked within a reasonable time, and have a written comment on the standard of work and how to improve it.

Parental Support

The aims of the department are:

1)      Encourage pupils to develop a love for mathematics.

2)      Develop pupils’ mathematical concepts, skills and knowledge.

3)      Improve numeracy skills.

4)      Provide opportunities for mathematical thinking and discussion.

It is important to have parental support to be able to achieve these aims.

Practical things that parents can do to help are look at their child’s exercise books.  You will be able to read comments, check homework has been done and encourage revision for assessments.  Practice mental arithmetic at home this would help to improve skills.  Ensure that your child attends maths lessons with equipment that is needed.
