Textile Technology KS3
Year 7
Course Content
Year 7 pupils use a sublimation printing process for decorating a piece of fabric. They design a piece of fabric using Microsoft Publisher. This enables pupils to have highly detailed and professional looking fabric using images from the internet and WordArt. The piece of fabric is printed using permanent sublimation inks. This original fabric is then used to make a fabric photo frame which displays a photograph of their choice and is reinforced with cardboard.
It is important that the item made in Year 7 textiles are useable and have a good take-home value.
Students learn to mark work using peer group assessment and this aids target setting.
Assessment Schedule
Pupils are assessed on various areas of the design process. They are awarded marks and levels for their research, design ideas, final design, plan of action and their final product.
Pupils are given opportunities to assess each others work. Peer assessment is enjoyed by the pupils and is beneficial to their progression.
Level Tracker sheets are used by the Design Technology Department to track progress. Level are given accordingly to pupils at the end of a module.
How parents can best support their children
Pupils will require a photograph (standard size) for this project. Basic skills are covered in this project measuring fabric in centimetres, cutting fabric, pinning and tacking fabric and also use of the sewing machine. These skills could be practiced at home if possible on scrap fabric!
YEAR 8
Course Content
Initially pupils revisit their knowledge and understanding of textiles skills employed in Year 7. Pupils have to design and make a bag for life with an eco friendly message portrayed on a patch pocket. They design their bag pockets on the computer and work in groups to submit a suitable final design for printing. Colouring techniques such as tie dye and transfer paper are used in the making. Pupils produce a drawstring bag which is then tested for suitability as a bag for life.

For this project pupils need to have a good understanding of sustainability and recycling. They may source bags for life from home to help with their design process.
YEAR 9
Course content
In Year 9 pupils have to design and make a funky fleece hat! They have to base their ideas on a basic beanie hat. For the higher levels they need to adapt this and add an embroidered logo using one of our new computerised sewing machines; Also in Year 9 they need to use their creativity for this product to be a success. Past pupils have enjoyed embellishing their hats with ribbon, hand-stitching and woolly pompoms! Hats are designed and presented in a design folio. Some pupils prefer to use the computer to design; other pupils prefer to use pencil sketches. All designs are clearly annotated and in colour. Pupils work through the design process for the final time in Key Stage 3, resulting in the making of an original hat project.
