Developing Reading at MACS

Mountain Ash Comprehensive School were asked to take part in an exciting county-wide reading project that brought key stage 1, 2 and 3 colleagues together by focusing on a shared goal; raising reading skills!

At MACS, Mrs Winters and Mrs Long targeted their Year 9 groups and set about the challenge of raising reading achievement through focused and explicit teaching of specific reading strategies.  The project targeted skills that enhanced inference and understanding of the texts studied in the Autumn term.

The project allowed a shared dialogue between staff and students.  There were pupil voice sessions held that highlighted pupil perceptions of reading and how after the project, gave insight into its impact on their READING learning.

On completion of the project, the English department have highlighted the continued need to reinforce these skills through the departmental improvement plan to raise pupil achievement further.   The level 5+ reading achievement for 2010 is 63% and it is now the intention of the English department to continue to focus on Inference and Deduction as well as Critical Literacy in the forthcoming academic year.
