Welcome
Welcome – Croeso
As the new headteacher of Mountain Ash I would like to thank you for the interest you are taking in our school. These are exciting times for our community and I’m both proud and privileged to lead this school. I live locally and am passionate about taking Mountain Ash forward. Ours is a very good school with outstanding facilities and a fantastic learning environment and ethos. I hope the following introduction gives you some insight into our school however there’s nothing like seeing things at first hand and I encourage you to visit our school and see for yourself. We are confident that if you visit the school its friendly atmosphere, first class learning resources and high standard of cleanliness and decoration will impress.
School Visits can be arranged through contacting the school office beforehand.

We are a mixed 11-18 community comprehensive with an excellent record of success in educational, sporting and cultural fields. Our academic record over the past few years shows us to be one of the most improved schools in Wales and we are confident of our ability to provide your child with a first rate education. Our teachers have proved time and time again that they are of the highest quality and they will use their many skills for the benefit of your children.
We are a school of around a 1000 pupils with a growing number of children choosing our school from outside the catchment area. Our size means that we are able to offer a wide and varied curriculum within superb educational facilities. The pastoral system is strong and Mountain Ash is a school where your child will be known, and will be able to develop academically and socially with confidence. Children can only do this if they feel happy, safe and secure and we have an extensive support network in place to ensure that this is the case.
Teaching is a significant strength of the school and is closely monitored. This is reflected in our superb examination results, where over the past three years close to 70% Year 11 pupils have gained at least 5 A* – C grades at GCSE or Vocational Courses, and all students leave with recognised qualifications. These results enable a very high proportion of our pupils to move on to form six, college or other training organisations. We currently have over 150 in years 12 and 13 who undertake a wide range of courses as part of the Cynon Valley Consortium. Results in the sixth form are also very good and our students succeed in winning places at a range of top class universities and higher education establishments.
If your child experiences problems of any kind in school all you need to do is contact us and we will make sure that there is somebody available to help. We are quick to deal with them and have created a very positive learning environment. Our pupils are generally mature, polite and supportive of each other with an eagerness to learn and to achieve at the highest level of their ability.
We pride ourselves on the links we have forged with the local community and parents have always found us to be a welcoming school. Through E3 and 5×60 our range of extra curricular activities is outstanding with students able to join clubs as diverse as rock climbing and photography. We also offer a range of events where you will be given the opportunity of exploring learning with your child, and which will make you better placed to support your child’s progress.
